Jason POV
Right from time, according to the ordinances and restrictions of the Pack: a son is to take over the throne from his father at the age of twenty.
Unfortunately for me, my father passed on years after my birth. My mother joined him a few years later, and the Pack was without Alpha or Luna for a long time.
Soon enough, I clocked twenty. Thanks to the members of the Pack who fought with me until that year, and the time to take over my throne as the Alpha, reached.
The day of my coronation arrived and I was crowned as Alpha of the Silver Crescent Pack in the presence of the other Wolves who could not be less delighted.
In unity, love, and harmony: I presided over the Pack with assistance from the seer, who was in direct contact with the moon goddess.
Same as the commanders and geriatric of the Pack, my right-hand man, and the Gamma: the woman I am closer to in the Pack.
I presided over the Pack more than my father, according to the statements of already old Wolves who were present when my father presided over the Pack.
Time passed and four years of ruling the Pack like I should, arrived. It was time for me to get married, and have a Luna by my side so we could begin to have our kids.
Meanwhile, in the City of Miami, there is a human who is employed in the Pack twice a month. Her name is Evelyn and she is in charge of cleaning the Pack with a crew of cleaners she dropped anchor with when the time for cleaning arrived.
I admired her to a fault.
She was tall, not so tall but pretty. Her green eyes did justice to her looks, and her voice sounded like that of a goddess.
But there was one problem. Evelyn is not a Wolf, which means we cannot have anything to do with each other. If a human is connected with a Wolf by marriage, the moon goddess may be irritated at their bond and they are cursed.
With these, I kept my feelings to myself and said nothing about it to Evelyn who may think highly of me.
There was a way she gazed at me, with fascination in her eyes. I didn't stay too close to her, no matter how I felt about her.
Of course, unless I didn't mind the penalty of the moon goddess.
Time was far spent and according to the seer, the moon goddess asked that I be married in four months.
“Four months?” I wailed when the message was decreed across to me. “I don't have a mate, yet,” I told the man who was seated on a couch in my chamber.
“Did you forget I can help you with that?” He asked and I shook my head.
How could I forget? He was a seer and the man who delivered messages from the moon goddess, the same as talking to her on our behalf.
The seer was the mouthpiece of the members of the Pack.
“Do what you have to do,” I told him later that day. “I need to be married in four months, you said so yourself.”
The seer nodded and left the room. Of course, after bowing to me. I lay on my bed for the rest of the evening before joining the Royal Family at the diner for dinner.
There was my Gamma, the favorite woman in my life. An inkling told me she might be the one the moon goddess had kept for me, and I didn't know how to react to the thought of it.
I have had no feelings for Chloe, all my life. But if she was the woman the moon goddess has ordained as my Luna, who am I to contradict that?
And there was my best man, the Beta of the Pack. His name is Jordan, a man I grew up with all my life. Jordan is older than I am, and the second strongest man in the Pack before Chloe. The gathering of the three of us is called The Royal Gathering.
Activities went on in the Pack as usual.
It was the end of another month and Evelyn was to come with her team to clean the Pack as usual. I was excited at the thought of seeing her again, although I knew quite well that nothing would go on between us.
She was at the gate, soon. Old women were fond of her, men and women also. On this day, Evelyn came alone, without the rest of the humans who came to clean the Pack with her.
“What is the matter?” I asked when she arrived at my chamber. “Where are the rest of the cleaners?” I asked, settling on my bed, far away from her. The well-being of my Pack came first, always.
“There was an emergency to attend to,” she explained. “It was I who volunteered to come clean the Pack, else no one would come in the first place.”
How thoughtful, I thought. “The maids will join you,” I promised her. “The Pack is too big for you to handle alone, Evelyn. You may leave.”
The maids did join her, as promised and I fell in a pool of my thoughts. Why did she volunteer to come clean the Pack alone, knowing fully well how big the Pack is?
Does she like me? I thought, shrugging off the thoughts the moment they walked into my head.
I cannot do something that will cause punishment to not just me, but the members of my Pack.
Two months passed and I forgot about Evelyn. The time for her to arrive at the Pack again was not close, until the next week. Once again, I concentrated on the members of the Pack and awaited the response from the seer who was still on a mission to consult the moon goddess and reveal who my mate was, to me.
“When do I expect a response?” I asked when he visited the room one evening. “This is the third week already.”
“The moon goddess is yet to give a reply to me,” the confused man explained. “There is a sign she has given and I am yet to see it on any woman in the Pack.”
I thought for a while and looked up to meet with his gaze. “Have you checked for the sign on Chloe? She could be the one. Who knows?”
“I have done that already, my lord,” the old man said. “Your chosen one is not Chloe or the young women I have seen so far, walk into the Pack.”
“Don't tell me I am to be married to an old woman!” I cried, moping at the old man. “Tell me you did not see a sign on them.”
“No, my lord,” the seer laughed at the look on my face. “None of the old women have been chosen for you, either.”
We talked some more, discussing and seeking a way forward to our problems. It was high time I had a Luna, and the moon goddess was yet to show us the sign on one of the women—just as the message was passed onto the seer.
The seer got up to leave, and so did I. When the door opened, there was Evelyn who walked into the compound.
While she walked, there was a look on the face of the Seer.
“She is the one.” I heard him say.
“She is—” I was going to speak, but swallowed back my words when the creature in me screamed. “Mate!”
