Chapter 1

Let me tell you a story, an adventure I made. It started when I was ten years old. I met someone, after that, bunch of people in a weird world came into me. Is it fun? Well, I will let you decide to it.

My parents perceived me as a girl who strongly believes in princes and princesses. They often show themselves as King and Queen to represent my dream. Little did they know, I do not want to be on the top of the castle. I was more interested with the creatures under it. Those who have fangs, wings, breathe out fire or water, poisonous and who the public describes as dangerous. They said, monsters like dragons, wolves, elves, goblins and the likes should be feared. Although for me, they deserve to be hugged and loved.

My age before was understood to have a wide and colorful imagination. I sometimes blend fantasy with my reality. My own curiosity also drives me. By it, I was introduced to a lifelong friend. He’s Erold whose my Mum started to scare me about him as a monster under my bed.

I remembered what Mum said the night I met Erold.

“Hunny, please, fall asleep now or else Erold. He is under your bed ready to eat you.”She said. I named the monster Erold. It popped out of my mind then my parents followed me calling him with that name. I don’t know what he was. We just labeled him as “monster under the bed”, a horrible creature threatening children to sleep or sacrifice their flesh in return.

But I never cared what they think about Erold. He’s going to be my friend tonight. I already saw him this afternoon. He’s trying to steal my pancake over my table. I nearly caught his hand but he was so fast. So I grab more food downstairs and place it under my bed. It has none under it but the food continue to lessen. I thought of closing the window and curtains, then turning off the light. I was amazed of what I witnessed. A pair of blue eyes was looking at me. He’s happily eating the cupcakes. I presented my name but I’m not getting his attention. I felt the eagerness to befriend him and a sudden to cancel my play with my neighbor who take Madam Silly, a dinosaur stuff toy with a feet of a duck, without my notice.

I faked my sleep to let Mum out of my room. She did not take away the lights as she thought that I was afraid of the dark. Now, I quickly ran to the switch to turn off the light, then leaped to the floor.

“Erold–“ I sang his name. “–It’s me Lila. Come out now.”

Erold doesn’t have terrible features some people expect them to have. He is soft, he’s as white as snow and his blue eyes shone in the dark. He stared while I’m beaming. He looks like a giant bunny without big ears and black nose.

“Is the-there n-no hoom-man?” he asked as he gazed left and right looking for a body other than mine. It was the first time he spoke to me. His voice is deep and hoarse. It’s dry yet emotional. Maybe he’s anxious to meet more people. Well, I’m happy because he talked to me. I am hopeful that we will be friends.

“I’m the only hooman,” I flashed another smile at him. I made sure he would feel relief with me. “Would you allow yourself to get out and play with me?”

Erold stared again. It was obvious that he’s nervous. He was slightly shaking. He avoided my gaze and looked to his left.

“Don’t worry, Erold, we’ll going to have fun!”

“I do-don’t want to.”

“But why?”

“Hoo-man h-harm mm-me.”

“No,” I shook my head. “Lila won’t hurt Erold.” In fact, I am looking forward to hug him. He seems so adorable with his fur.

“Erold, not my name,” he spoke slowly.

“Then what’s your name?” I waited for some time to his answer but his words kind of disappointed me.

“Er…Erold.”

“You’re not joking?"

“Erold, not.” He’s now relaxed but I don’t know how to react.

I immediately replaced my awkwardness with the thought of a tea party. I left him there, turned on the lights and set up my mini table and two chairs. I didn’t include Mrs Toffee– a giraffe whose smile looked like a cow and Sir Puto– a blue pig with chicken feathers. I dumped them aside and pull out my two pink tea cups and gold teapot. I also arranged the cake made of plastic. It looks delicious with the cherry on top but my dad won’t let me have a bite with it. He said it was not edible. I folded table napkins, it wasn’t good yet acceptable. I really did my best while doing it.

What to do next?

Ahh, yes, tea party wouldn’t be completed if I don’t have any gowns to wear. I wear my gown over my pajamas and dance around. Hmm.. how about Erold? Aha! A pink butterfly wings would be enough. I hope he would love it.

I put off the lights and lied down under my bed looking for the pair of blue eyes. I beamed at Erold.

“Erold, hungry,” he said.

“Perfect! I prepared a tea party!” I thought he would love the idea but he looks terrified. “Erold, are you all right?”

“P-party? M-many hooman?”

“No, there’s only you and me, Erold. We’ll drink more tea and eat cakes!”

“Erold, no come out.”

“Erold should.” I was eager to let him out.

“Erold should not.”

“Why?” I dropped my fist on the floor.

“Big Erold.”

“Oh,” I didn’t think of it. “You can come out. Believe in yourself, Erold. You can do it.” He did it earlier with his hand. His body will going to make it. He’s really white, big and cute.

Erold sighed. I stood up to make him a way. My bed slightly shaken as his white body starts to get out. One by one, I was seeing his whole. It was furry and dusty. He’s been in a long time under the bed or any furniture. He is also huge and high. He lowered his head as it nearly reach the ceiling. My height was near on his thigh.

I covered my mouth, I comtained my smile while I looked up on him. "I finally have my own gentle giant. And he is living on my room!" I said to myself.
