The wind came down from the northern mountains carrying the smell of snow, iron, and wolves.
Ronan Blackthorn stood on the stone wall above the training grounds and watched two hundred warriors move below him.
Tomorrow, three hundred warriors would enter Silvermoon under diplomatic protection. Ronan intended to use the gathering to begin his revenge.
His fingers tightened around the black iron railing.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of sharpening blades.
Twenty years of learning enemy names.
He had been nine years old when Blackthorn Keep burned.
He remembered hiding beneath the dining table while flames crawled across the ceiling. He remembered his father roaring for the guards. He remembered his mother pushing him toward a servant's passage.
And he remembered the last thing she had said.
Run, Ronan. Do not let them take your blood.
He had run.
She had not.
Neither had his father.
Silvermoon had been blamed before sunrise.
Their warriors had crossed the border, murdered the Blackthorn Alpha and Luna, stolen half the territory, and vanished into the forest.
He had one purpose left.
Make Silvermoon kneel.
"You're going to break the railing."
Darius's voice came from behind him.
Ronan did not turn.
"Then build a stronger one."
"It will be."
"Because it is true."
Ronan finally looked at him.
Darius did not lower his gaze.
"Careful."
Darius followed him into the armory. “You intend to infiltrate Silvermoon.” “Yes. Under the name Kael Varr.” “You planned this before becoming Alpha?” “I planned it before becoming a man.” Darius studied him. “And when revenge stops being enough?” “It will be enough.” “No. You know what you hate.”
Inside, maps covered the walls: patrol routes, watchtowers, roads, tunnels, and weaknesses. “The western tower changes commanders every third night. The eastern gate has a blind corridor. Their northern stores are beneath the old chapel.”
“You have prepared everything.” “I have.” “But you don't know what comes after revenge.” Ronan rolled the map shut.
His wolf pushed against his skin, but Ronan forced it down. He rolled the map shut. “Tomorrow I enter Silvermoon, find their records, and open the gates from within.” “And after that?” “Blackthorn enters.”
“You may destroy both packs,” Darius warned. “Then let them fall.” “Some are children.” Smoke flashed through Ronan's mind. “I know what war costs.”
Darius watched him.
"Do you?"
Ronan walked out.
The training grounds had fallen silent.
Two hundred warriors waited.
"Tomorrow we enter Silvermoon as guests."
The warriors listened.
He looked toward the mountains.
His voice dropped.
The warriors raised their fists.
His mother's.
He picked it up carefully.
For years he had hated Silvermoon because hatred gave his grief somewhere to live.
Tomorrow, he would finally have the chance to bury it.
A knock sounded.
"Enter."
An old man stepped inside wearing a gray cloak and carrying a staff carved with crescent moons.
Ronan recognized him.
"Priest Malach."
The old Moon Priest closed the door.
"You should not be here."
"I could say the same of you."
Ronan's hand moved toward his dagger.
Malach smiled faintly. "I did not come to stop your war."
"Then why?"
"The moon is changing."
Ronan glanced outside.
Clouds covered the sky.
"You summoned me here to discuss the weather?"
"No."
Malach turned. His eyes looked almost silver in the candlelight.
"I came because tomorrow night, when you enter Silvermoon, you will meet someone."
Ronan's patience vanished.
"I already know who I intend to meet."
"No."
The priest stepped closer.
"You have spent twenty years preparing to meet your enemy."
His voice lowered.
"Tomorrow, you will meet your fate."
Ronan laughed without humor.
"Fate is a word people use when they are too weak to admit they made a mistake."
"Perhaps. But your wolf will know her."
Ronan went still.
"Who?"
Fear crossed the priest's ancient face.
"The woman who will destroy everything you believe."
Ronan's wolf slammed against his ribs.
Once.
Twice.
Not in anger.
In recognition of something that did not yet exist.
Malach whispered, "When you discover who she is, you will have to choose between the blood you came to avenge..."
He paused.
"...and the woman your wolf was born to love."
Ronan stared at him.
Outside, a lone wolf began to howl.
Then another answered.
Ronan looked toward Silvermoon.
For the first time in twenty years, he wondered whether tomorrow's enemy was waiting for him there, or whether she had been waiting all along.
Before dawn, Ronan opened a locked chest containing three letters found in the ruins of Blackthorn Keep. The oldest contained one sentence: The moon remembers what blood forgets. Silvermoon had taken his parents, childhood, and home. Yet when he closed the chest, his wolf stirred. For one impossible second, Ronan caught an unfamiliar scent. Warm. Wild. Faintly sweet. Somewhere inside Silvermoon, a woman was already changing his life.
Morning came without mercy.
The first horn sounded before sunrise.
Ronan was already dressed, fastening the final clasp of his black coat. The silver insignia of the Blackthorn Alpha rested against his chest.
Ronan had imagined this moment for years: crossing into Silvermoon, confronting Alpha Cassian, and making him answer for his parents' deaths. He had never imagined a woman. Your wolf will know her. He pushed the thought away. Darius entered. “The Alpha Council wants peace,” Darius said. “Twenty years late.” “They want you to avoid provoking Cassian.” “The Moon Priest left before dawn.” “Where?” “He refused to say.” “You believe him?” Darius asked. “No.” “You're thinking about what he said.” “Then stop asking questions.” They descended together.
“We leave as diplomats. Obey Silvermoon laws while inside their territory.” A warrior asked, “And if they attack?” “Defend yourself.” Ronan faced the ranks. “Our enemies expect hatred. Give them discipline. They expect revenge. Give them patience.” The gates opened. Ronan mounted his horse and looked back at Blackthorn Keep. Silvermoon trees rose taller beyond the ridge, their pale leaves glowing beneath the morning light. Ronan hated how beautiful they were.
The border stone stood ahead, carved with two wolves facing opposite directions. “Twenty years,” Darius said. Ronan stepped across. Warmth spread through his chest. Recognition. His wolf lifted its head. “Alpha?” “Nothing.” But his wolf had felt someone.
By noon, Silvermoon guards appeared. “State your purpose.” Ronan handed over the diplomatic seal. “Alpha Ronan Blackthorn, here for the annual gathering.” “Alpha Cassian awaits you.” “Then take me to him.” Ronan memorized every guard position and road. Then he smelled her.
The forest opened. Silvermoon appeared, surrounded by white stone walls and silver banners. Ronan noticed fewer warriors than expected. Hundreds of Silvermoon wolves gathered along the road. Darius leaned closer. “Remember why we're here.” “I remember.” Then Ronan smelled her.
The scent was faint at first.
Moonlight after rain.
Wildflowers.
Warm skin.
Something ancient beneath it.
His wolf exploded awake.
Ronan nearly lost control of the horse.
His fingers tightened around the reins.
Darius noticed.
"What is it?"
Ronan did not answer.
The scent grew stronger.
His wolf pushed against his ribs so violently that his vision blurred.
Then he saw her.
She stood on the balcony of the Alpha residence.
A young woman in a silver dress.
Dark hair moved around her shoulders in the wind.
She was not smiling.
She was watching him.
Their eyes met.
Everything stopped.
The noise of the courtyard disappeared.
The warriors vanished.
The banners vanished.
Even the mountain seemed to disappear.
Ronan could hear only his own heartbeat.
Then his wolf spoke inside him.
**Mine.**
Ronan's breath caught.
No.
His wolf had never spoken with such certainty.
The woman placed one hand against the balcony railing.
Her expression changed.
Shock.
Recognition.
Fear.
Her lips parted.
And Ronan knew before she spoke.
She knew too.
The scent hit him again.
Stronger.
Impossible to ignore.
His wolf surged forward.
**Mate.**
Ronan stared at her.
The daughter of the enemy Alpha.
The woman whose bloodline he had sworn to destroy.
His fated mate.
The irony was so cruel that for one moment he almost laughed.
Then the balcony doors opened.
An older man stepped beside the woman.
Alpha Cassian Veyne.
Ronan's hand moved instinctively toward his sword.
Cassian looked down at him.
Neither man spoke.
Twenty years of hatred passed between their eyes.
Then Cassian's gaze moved toward his daughter.
Ronan followed it.
The girl was still staring at him.
Something inside Ronan shifted.
His wolf wanted closer.
His mind demanded distance.
He had come to Silvermoon to destroy the woman standing above him.
Instead, his wolf had just claimed her.
Ronan slowly lowered his hand from his sword.
Darius whispered beside him.
"Ronan."
He barely heard him.
The woman descended the steps.
Each step brought her closer.
Each step made his wolf more restless.
When she reached the courtyard, she stopped several feet away.
The air between them seemed charged.
She looked directly into his eyes.
"What are you doing here?"
Her voice was soft.
But Ronan heard something beneath it.
Fear.
He forced his expression into coldness.
"Diplomacy."
She studied him.
"You're lying."
Ronan's heart struck hard against his ribs.
No one spoke to him that way.
No one except her.
He should have walked away.
Instead, he asked, "Who are you?"
Her eyes narrowed.
"You know who I am."
He did.
But hearing her name would make this real.
"Elara."
She stiffened.
Then the bond between them snapped tight.
Ronan felt her heartbeat.
She felt his.
For one terrifying second, he saw something that was not his memory.
A woman running through a burning forest.
A silver crown.
Blood on snow.
A voice screaming his name.
Then it vanished.
Elara staggered.
Ronan caught her before she fell.
The moment his hands touched her, his entire body went still.
Her eyes widened.
She looked at him as though she had seen a ghost.
"You're..."
Ronan waited.
Elara swallowed.
"My mate."
The words landed like a blade.
Ronan looked toward Cassian.
The Alpha's face had gone completely pale.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Afraid.
That frightened Ronan more than the bond.
Cassian already knew.
He knew what Elara was.
He knew what Ronan was.
And for the first time since entering Silvermoon territory, Ronan understood that the war might have been built on a secret far older than the deaths of his parents.
Cassian stepped forward.
"Elara."
She turned.
"Father?"
"Come inside."
Ronan watched the Alpha's face.
Cassian's fear had become calculation.
And somewhere beneath the stone palace, something ancient seemed to stir.
Ronan's wolf went silent.
Then, for the first time in twenty years, it whispered a warning.
**Run.**
